Tumescent liposuction is performed with a technique that allows maximum viability of fat cells. Cells are then separated from other fluids and blood with which they are aspirated, mixed with antibiotics, and then injected into buttocks in a linear manner within fatty tissues as well as skin layers.
Typically, the procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and takes between 2-4 hours depending on the number of areas of liposuction performed. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
There is some pain associated with the procedure that is comparable to muscle soreness; Any discomfort is controlled well by oral pain medication. You will not be able to sit directly on the buttocks for a week to prevent it from getting absorbed.
Typically, the results of the surgery last forever as long as you maintain a normal weight. If you gain weight the areas of liposuction may get larger but so will all other areas of your body; so it is a comparative improvement that will last.
The major risks of the surgery are fat embolism and infection which occur uncommonly. Care is taken to place the fat in only a superficial area and not in the buttocks muscles. These risks can also occur with liposuction. Bleeding is also a small risk. 20% of the fat is expected to resorb over time which may lead to a diminished result in some patients.
Some patients who have not enough fat for injection may benefit from a silicone implant in the buttocks but beware that these procedures look and feel un-natural and have a high complication rate.
What is a BBL (Brazilian Buttock lift)?
Plastic surgery techniques for buttock enlargement and/or buttock lift have made substantial strides over the past few years. Previously only silicone elastomers were available for enlargement of buttocks. These silicone blocks led to firm buttocks with a high rate of complications and I use them rarely due to patient dissatisfaction.
Over the past years a new technique using the patient’s own fat has gained popularity especially amongst Brazilian plastic surgeons and has come to be known as the Brazilian buttock augmentation / enlargement or buttock lift.
The procedure involves liposuction of several liters of fat from the patient’s hips, thighs and abdomen and injection of fat into buttocks using multiple passes of a small tube to place fat in linear channels under the skin and in buttocks muscle. Recovery is speedy but a garment must be worn for several weeks and direct pressure on buttocks must be avoided.
Although it is expected that some of the fat cells will die and be absorbed, 70-80% are expected to survive and be incorporated into the body as normal fat cells; growing larger with weight gain and getting smaller with weight loss. However, since a sculpting has also been performed of the torso, this result will always remain and not be affected by weight fluctuations too much.
Surgery in Surgery center
A Brazilian buttock lift is performed under general anesthesia in a surgery center. The more areas of liposuction to harvest the fat the more the time needed but typically it takes 2- 4 hours.
You need to have someone stay with you the night after liposuction surgery and can usually resume normal activities except exercise in 4 -7 days. The cost for a BBL includes the operating room fee and all of your follow-up visits.
